About Imbec-ili
It all started in September 1997,
when Ivana, Marija, Bojana, Elena and Cece enrolled in first year high school. During introductory classes they started talking smack to each other, beeing 5 very distinctive individuals that they are. They gradually realized that the atmosphere was quite fun when everyone was together, so they started hanging out. Ivana had an appendix operation. The other girls wanted to visit her so they made her a poster of a girl with a removed appendix. Appendix (blind gut) was drawn with dark glasses and a cane. The poster was a mixed technique, markers, crayons, sunflower seeds etc. Then IMBEC realized how much fun making posters was especially the working process where everyone's idea was welcome.Soon after that, we put the initials of all our names together and the name IMBEC was born. We added the suffix „ili“ to form a word, which at that point was interesting to us. In December 1997 we made our very first graffiti - BUG! We were nervous and excited. We used to go hungry on our lunch breaks at school just to save money to buy the expensive sprays. After our first graffiti, the price of one spray can became the currency and measurement for everything.

Initially, getting information about graffiti types, styles, working methods etc. was difficult. Trips to cool graffiti places were expensive and internet was slow. We would ask our friend to take pictures when they would go traveling. At that time there were only dial-up modems, opening an image was excruciatingly slow, but we sat there waiting with excitement downloading to floppy disks and sharing them amongst our selfs. Getting the right spray can colors was also tricky. We bought them at car stores and the assortment was limited. Car dealers didn't stock happy bright spray paint colors. That is why we began to mix paint and sprays, so we can satisfy the required color palette. Nothing was gonna discourage us.
